The Art of Line
When drawing shifts us from thinking to seeing, it cultivates attention, confidence and creative expression one line at time.
Many drawing methods begin with technique. The Art of Line begins with the hand and perception. Technique develops naturally through seeing and practice.
The hand develops sensitivity to rhythm, pressure, and flow.
The eye recognizes proportion, angle, and spatial relationships.
Observation gradually reveals the underlying structure of form.

Jan zhou
Jan Zhou is an artist, designer, and educator whose practice spans art, fashion, and drawing.
Educated in both China and the United States, she has spent more than twenty-five years working across creative disciplines and teaching in different cultural and educational environments. These experiences gradually shaped her interest in how we learn—not only through knowledge and technique, but through observation, repetition, and the connection between the hand, eye, and mind.
The Art of Line grew from this exploration. Drawing on principles rooted in traditional Chinese art training and her experience in contemporary art and design education, Jan developed the practice as a way to return drawing to something fundamental: learning to see, feel, and understand through line.
TEDx TALK
In her TEDx talk, Jan Zhou explores how learning extends beyond knowledge and technique into the body, attention, repetition, and lived experience. These ideas form part of the foundation from which The Art of Line developed.
